Binoculars
Authored By: R. Reitz
Binoculars save firefighters time and energy when a line of sight is possible, which is rare. Binoculars allow line scouts to track fire growth and rate of spread progress to avoid entrapment. Personnel monitoring fire intensity and rate of spread also use binoculars to plan recommendations for future operations based upon expected fire behavior. Lookouts use binoculars to watch the movements of other crew members and current fire behavior. Change in fire behavior is reported back to the Superintendent for assessment and action.
