Southern Appalachian Imperiled Fishes

Imperiled species are either federally listed as endangered (E), threatened (T), proposed endangered (PE), category 1 candidate for listing, or category 2 candidate (designation now discontinued).

Global ranks are assigned by NatureServe and state Natural Heritage Programs as follows:

  • G1- Extremely rare and critically imperiled, with 5 or fewer occurrences or very few remaining individuals.
  • G2 - Very rare and imperiled, with 6 - 20 occurrences or few remaining individuals.
  • G3 - Either very rare and local throughout its range or found locally (sometimes abundantly) in a restricted range, with usually fewer than 100 occurrences documented.
  • G4 - Apparently secure globally, though possibly quite rare in parts of its range, with usually 100 - 1,000 occurrences.
  • G5 - Demonstrably secure globally, though possibly quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery, with usually at least 1,000 occurrences.
  • G? - Unranked or uncertain rank.
  • G_Q_ - Questionable taxonomic assignment.
  • G_T_- Rank of subspecies or population. For example, G5T1 denotes a critically imperiled subspeces of a globally secure species.
