The Southern Variant of FVS

Authored By: H. M. Rauscher

The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is the national growth and yield prediction system of the USDA Forest Service. It is managed by the Forest Management Service Center in Fort Collins, CO.

FVS is a very large and complex system. It is, however, well documented and the Service Center provides periodic training classes available to anyone. There is also an online tutorial that has been developed by researchers at Utah State University.

An overview of how to use FVS in forest management can be found in Teck et al. 1996.
