Creating Citations

A citation is a method used in the standard scientific literature to give credit to others when you are using their published data, ideas, or even exact words if put inside quotes. It is a formal way to attribute credit for scientific work.

Citations can appear within encyclopedia pages in many different ways, as for example, Hirsch (1973), Hirsch and Webster (1989), Webster et al. (1976), according to Webster (1976), Webster (1976) produced information that ..., etc.The author should refer to the style guide for information on how to reference a publication within the body text. To link reference to a publication to a citation object, highlight thereference within the textand select the citation icon at the top of the encyclopedia editor or type CTRL-Shift R and the citation dialog box appears. In the

citation dialog box, the author has the option of choosing a citation from the list of ones that have already been created or creating a new citation if it does not appear in the list.

If the reference already exists in the encyclopedia system, as in this case we were looking for Hack (1982), thenscroll down the alphabetical list of citations, locate it, check to make sure its the rightpublication and click OK. The reference appears in the encyclopedia as (Hack, 1982).

If the reference is not in the system, you must select "Add a new citation" and press OK. A second dialog box then appears. At this point, you need to know what type of reference you need to enter because the formats will vary by type. The citation style guide provides all the

necessary formats and

example to allow you to choosethe correct one.

Select a reference type, (e.g. Journal Article) and press the "Continue" action box. Enter

the relevant information in the fields provided in the citation dialog box that appears.
